It’s six o’clock in the morning, I’m doing what I usually do
I take orders, and pour coffee, and listen to what's new
Two eggs easy, hash browns, Bill's got a broken heart - again
Buckwheat pancakes, bacon side, Marty's truck won't start

I was just out of school, not sure what I would do
Took a job waiting tables, just for a week or two.
Here I am at forty three; I guess I'm going to stay
It’s just another busy morning at the American Dream Cafe

Now up there on that TV screen, they put on quite a show
But the folks who really matter are the people that you know
You might think this is nowhere; I don't see it that way
There's a lot of real good people at the American Dream Cafe

But if I told you it was all great, that would be a lie
The rich keep getting richer, the rest of us get by
The plant closed down last year, a lot of folks moved on
If it wasn't for that Interstate, this cafe would be gone

The papers are always full of bad news; it’s hard to know what's true
Seems so far away until it happens to you
Jobs gone to China, global warming’s here to stay

John and Linda are getting married, somewhere out of town
The price of corn and soybeans goes up and down
Bobbie bought a backhoe, and she’s got a baby on the way
